| Gone are the days of lying there yelling, "Medic! Medic!" Soldiers must have the ability to assess their own wounds, provide self or buddy aid if needed, and continue the mission if capable. The bottom line, is a trained Combat Livesaver (CLS) is capable, equipped, and trained to decrease preventable battlefield deaths." Combat Lifesaver Soldiers receive 40 hours of in depth instruction on how to treat combat injuries and critical lifesaving techniques. All CLS graduates are taught how to use everything in the new CLS Bag/Kit that contains a tourniquet, emergency trauma dressing, sterile gauze, tape, surgical gloves and a even a nasopharyngeal airway tube (a tube inserted in the nostril, extending to the trachea, that significantly aids in breathing). The kits are currently being fielded in combat as part of initial issue of equipment. Soldiers from the 35th MP Co. made the following statements about their CLS training: "I thought the training was pretty high speed, I've never been through anything like this. I've done CLS training before but it was all classroom." Spc. James Hallagin, gunner, 35th MP Co. "It was exhausting, we were pretty smoked after we got done. I feel pretty good. It's something we're going to be able to use over [in Iraq]." Pvt. Christopher Cates, 35th MP Co. The EDGE R&D CLS training of today resembles training of the past in that it still covers basic wound wrapping, splinting and intravenous fluid delivery. But that is where the resemblance ends. CLS soldiers are meant to be the first line of defense on the battlefield, therefore, it is imperative that they are fully trained in several life-saving methods. CLS training today includes insertion of combination breathing tubes; needle decompression, which relieves the pressure when a lung has been punctured; and emergency crichothyrotomy, which involves cutting an access hole in the trachea and inserting a breathing tube. The EDGE R&D Combat Lifesaver/Warrior Training has one ultimate goal -- To prevent unnecessary death, both at home and on the battlefield. Our Mobile Teams are always prepared to travel to meet the quality of training you deserve. |
